What do these developments mean for users?

It means the security monitoring personnel can manage the security system processes and focus on coordinating first responder effectiveness instead of watching sensor displays and dispatching first responders.

Why is it important to use technology in security solutions?

The technology is important because it addresses an emerging need to control manpower in a ever increasing sensor input environment that presents too much information for monitors to comprehend. In addition, the threats are improving in sophistication to the point that a highly coordinated and rapid response to threat is required which puts a stressful and taxing loading on the security personnel.

Benefits

1.        Manpower

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is assisting airports and other critical infrastructure in understanding threats and is working cooperatively with them to develop and evaluate technologies and procedures to counter threats. A key aspect of the challenge is to determine effective solutions that are manpower neutral and can be managed by the current expertise level of security professionals.

2.        Targeted products and services

Products and services are chosen based on the needs of the application to deter and prevent known threats. The threat determines the problem and the current infrastructure creates the boundary conditions that have to be addressed to protect against the threat. Manpower and training present the greatest challenges to present solutions that complement those constraints while achieving the stated requirements.

3.        Improved security procedures

Technology often represents an opportunity to better understand the effectiveness of current security approaches. Policy violations may be occurring by authorized personnel in areas where it is difficult to monitor. When behavioral based analytics are introduced it can result in a change in behavior of authorized personnel that will result in a reduction of false alarms by the mere fact that users will know that they will always be caught by the technology and change their behavior. The reduction in false alarms frees up the security monitors to concentrate on real alarms. So benefits include have a greater compliance of policy by authorized users and a corresponding reduction in false alerts that allows a heightened attentiveness to real alarms.

4.        Stakeholder involvement

The major challenges in the installation were addressed by identifying the key stakeholders and addressing their problems and needs. Special attention to having a flexible, scalable, and open architecture provided confidence via the “test as you go” approach.

5.        Scalable and repeatable solutions

Strategically, the implemented architecture allows more projects to leverage a new security baseline established by the analytics and integrated environment. Tactically additional projects or expansion of existing capability can be achieved while complementing the overall security capability without having to continuously recalibrate other installed systems.
